Early hand-drawn exploration. Foundation of the visual language.
A sketchbook filled front to back in Madrid, one character per page. Thin continuous line, no shading, no correction, small absurd creatures made of plumbing, limbs, eyes and furniture, each one worked out in a single sitting and then left alone.
It is the most cartoonish series in the archive and the least self-conscious, which is exactly why it matters. The vocabulary that later gets used with a straight face, the invented signs, the eyes on everything, the bodies assembled from parts that do not belong together, is all here first, drawn for fun.
The foundation of the visual language, made before there was a reason to have one.
The pages here are the sketchbook itself, photographed open at 5950 px and cropped to the drawn page, signed in the corner, the red ribbon still in the spine. Until now this node showed the same six drawings as framed prints leaning on a grey wall, at a tenth of the size.
