The same question, asked of a body

A human figure in pale line on a deep blue speckled ground, small pale forms drifting across the body

Two figures, each held inside a ground that will not stay behind them. One stands in a field of blue speckle, pale line crossing it, small pale forms drifting over the body as if the surface were weather. The other is red and white over a mottled pink, the line looping across the chest in a single black run.

Red, and one black run

The horse asked how little line could carry a body and trusted the eye to close it. These ask the opposite question of a human figure and give it far less mercy: the ground is allowed to eat into the body, and what survives is whatever the drawing can hold against it.

The bridge between the early ink work and the installations, the point where the drawings first admit that surface and light are materials too.
